Job Description

 

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Under the direction and leadership of the Head Nurse the staff nurse in Labor and Delivery will provide professional patient care according to the scope of regulatory standards relating to

JCAHO. DOI-J, OR, AWHONN, PACU, ACOG maternity and Newborn Services, policies and procedures as set forward by HHC and Bellevue Hospital.

STAFF NURSE RESPONSIBILITIES

1) Performs ongoing assessment and reassessment of ant-partum, post-partum and

newborn patients and initiates appropriate intervention.

2) Demonstrates skills and knowledge of mother and baby care and categorizes patient in the appropriate level of classification on Admission, per shift and or as needed.

3) Demonstrates knowledge and direct patients care skills in ante-partum and post-partum. Related

complications.

4) Demonstrates knowledge of the electronic fetal monitor for ante-partum fetal surveillance.

5) Performs nursing skills and intervention efficiently, safely, consistently and cost-effectively.

6) Observes symptoms or changes in the patient, Identifies emergency situations promptly.

7) Utilizes appropriate equipment/supplies in procedures for airway management.

8) Initiates action and summons assistance of other personnel.

9) Demonstrates knowledge in the management of high-risk pregnant women, and the ability to care for

post and ante partum patients with special needs i.e. adolescent, substance abuse etc.

10) Performs BCLS skills (age-specific)

11) Demonstrates knowledge on activation of rapid response team (RRT).

12) Prepares and administers medications according to the 5 rights, safety and infection control guidelines as per provider orders.

13) Screens patient for pain during initial assessment and reassess according to guidelines.

14) Assesses monitors and evaluates patient and parent behavior for high-risk criteria. Assess/identify and intervene appropriately for infants with special considerations i.e. diabetic, LGA.

15) Screens patient for the risk of restraints and follow guidelines in the application if needed.

16) Assesses learning needs, preferences, etc.

17) Communicates effectively with patients, families and colleagues.

18) Discusses/observes documentation guidelines on Hospital generic forms/records, unit specific forms/records.

19) Observes legibility on documentation.

20) Enters and retrieves patient related data.

21) Discusses/implements roles/responsibilities in internal /external disasters, role in incident command center.

22) Delegates assignments based on patient acuity and employee skill level.

23) Demonstrates knowledge on restraints guidelines.

24) Demonstrates awareness and an acceptance cultural diversity in patient’s population on workforce.

25) Provides patient’s education accordingly.

26) Identifies and demonstrate technique on interpersonal/team building.

27) Assesses monitors and evaluates analgesic with consideration on age-specific.

28) Demonstrates knowledge on population specific patient management for their area.

29) Demonstrates knowledge on limited English proficiency.

30) Participates on the data collection process

Minimum Qualifications

 

1. Licensed and currently registered or otherwise duly authorized to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State; and,
2. Demonstrated commitment to continued professional development.
