Through rigorous, objective, and accessible analysis and outreach, the Institute will provide citizens and governments with the facts they need to make informed public policy decisions.

The Rockefeller Institute of Government is a part of SUNY Empire State College.

Empire State College was established in 1971 as a distinctive statewide SUNY institution focused on nontraditional teaching and learning.

Job Description: The Executive Director is responsible for the management, administration, fiscal health and the long-term growth and success of the Institute.

The Executive Director will provide daily oversight and direction of its research activities and strategic planning.

The Director will develop and execute an external funding plan and work with the New York State Legislature and executive staff to ensure that the Institute continues to be well-supported.

S/he will partner with stakeholders including federal officials, local government and nonprofit organizations, business leaders, academics and the media.

The Executive Director reports to the Chief of Staff of SUNY Empire State College.

Position Responsibilities: Build stakeholder support for a strategic vision that enhances the Institute’s role in policy, public affairs, and academic arenas.

Develop and support the strategic goals, including academic mission, of the Rockefeller Institute of Government.

Develop and implement a fundraising plan to increase Institute revenues and to develop and implement annual budgets and long-range fiscal plans that ensure the Institute’s success.

Lead the design and strategic planning of the Institutes funded research.

Execute research and policy analysis in line with the mission of the Institute.

Publish both scholarly and public policy-oriented papers, articles, and books that are relevant to the Institute’s areas of strength and emerging areas.

Serve as the Institute’s chief representative and spokesperson.

Present at scholarly conferences, public policy forums and events.

Work in collaboration with leadership across all SUNY campuses to identify new areas of interest and opportunity for the Institute and incorporate expertise from across the SUNY system in the Institute’s work.

Provide administrative support to facilitate and promote academic excellence including recruiting, retaining and leading a talented team of researchers and senior staff.

Requirements: Preferred Qualifications: Education: Doctoral Degree (Ph.D.

or J.D) preferred.

Additional graduate degrees with commensurate experience will be considered.

Experience: Successful candidate will have established credibility in the public policy, academic, and government arenas.

A minimum of ten (10) years’ experience in a related university position, think tank/research institute, state or federal government, or combination thereof.

S/he should have a national reputation for public policy expertise in fields such as public management, finance, U.S.

federalism, state and local government, social science research, and public policy formulation and implementation.

Additional Information: Rank/Salary: $150,000-$175,000 Empire State College is an EOE employer.
